Mississauga Animal Services is asking residents to consider opening their homes to a shelter pet as overcrowding forces the city to launch a special adoption event.
The shelter has reached capacity for dogs, and officials say every adoption will help create space for other animals in need of care.
From Aug. 8 to Aug. 22, residents can adopt any dog or cat at Mississauga Animal Services for $25, plus HST and any applicable pet licensing fees.
The reduced adoption fee is a significant discount from the shelter’s regular rates, which are typically $280 plus HST for dogs and puppies and up to $190 plus HST for cats and kittens.
The Homeward Bound adoption event is open to anyone looking to add a pet to their family. No appointment is required, although wait times may vary. Adopters must be at least 18 years old.
“Every adoption helps create space for other animals in need,” the city said.
All animals available through Mississauga Animal Services receive basic medical care before adoption, including vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery, helping reduce some of the initial costs that come with bringing a new pet home.
Shelter staff can also provide guidance for first-time pet owners, including advice on training, food, exercise and helping a new animal adjust to its surroundings.
The city says adopting from a shelter gives animals a second chance while helping address the growing demand for space and resources.
For those who cannot adopt, there are other ways to support animals at the shelter, including fostering.
Foster volunteers provide temporary homes for animals while they wait for adoption. The shelter provides supplies, including food, bedding, toys and veterinary care, with foster placements ranging from a few weeks to several months.
Residents can also help by donating supplies such as pet food, towels, blankets, toys, leashes, collars and other animal care items.
The Homeward Bound adoption event runs Saturday, Aug. 8 to Saturday, Aug. 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mississauga Animal Services, located at 735 Central Pkwy. W.
For residents who have been thinking about adding a dog or cat to their household, city officials say now could be the perfect time to give a shelter animal a new home.
