SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Soccer team defeated Trinity Western, 2-0, in their lone preseason tune-up before heading into the 2026 season. The Gaucho goals came from sophomore Avery Standish and senior Hayden Halscheid.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite not scoring their goals until the second half, the Gauchos had chances in the first half to net a few. In the 13th minute, Dakota Watterson and Reese Wroblewski each took shots on net, but the Trinity Western goalkeeper saved both. Additionally, a few crosses and corner kicks added some other scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, UC Santa Barbara did not capitalize.
In the second half, after a complete lineup change for the Gauchos, the offense was clicking right away. Shots from point-blank range by Delilah Vega-Aguilar and Alondra Talamantes were both saved by Trinity Western. In the 59th minute, the Gauchos broke through. After a shot by Chayse Yu was deflected, Avery Standish collected the rebound and scored to put the Gauchos up 1-0.
The Gauchos continued to maintain possession and get shots off against Trinity Western’s goalkeeper. They would net their second goal in the 86th minute. Stella Etcheverry sent a perfect ball into the middle of the box that Hayden Halscheid finished for the Gauchos two goal lead. The Gauchos hung on down the stretch and finished with the clean sheet.
