One Edmonton gathering will turn streets and people into a powerful national symbol before music brings the community’s Independence Day celebration to a close.
Edmonton’s Ukrainian community will hold events marking Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 23. The program will take place at Violet King Henry Plaza, according to an announcement by the Ukrainian National Youth Federation (UNYF) Edmonton.
Rally and “Living Tryzub” in Edmonton
A traditional rally in support of Ukraine will begin at 1:00 p.m. Representatives of Ukrainian organizations and the Canadian government will take part. The main focus will be Canada’s continued support for Ukraine.
From 1:30 to 2:00 p.m., participants will form a “living Tryzub,” lining up in the outline of Ukraine’s coat of arms. Attendees are encouraged to wear embroidered shirts or blue-and-yellow clothing, and to bring Ukrainian flags and national symbols.
Bike Ride Along a Route Shaped Like Ukraine’s Coat of Arms
A bike ride in support of Ukraine will begin at 2:00 p.m. The route was designed by Oleksandr Danyleiko, former Consul General of Ukraine in Edmonton. It was planned so that the GPS track on the city map forms a Tryzub.
The route will be approximately 30 kilometres long, and the ride is expected to last about three hours. Participants who do not join the ride will form a living chain of unity to support the cyclists.
Concert for Ukraine’s Independence Day
The final event will be a concert for Ukraine’s Independence Day, scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Ukrainian Youth Unity Complex. It will be organized by the Edmonton branch of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
The events are intended to demonstrate the community’s unity and highlight the need for international support for Ukraine, the liberation of occupied territories, and the release of Ukrainian prisoners.
