A woman suffered serious injuries after a collision involving a Winnipeg police vehicle and a cyclist in downtown Winnipeg last week.
The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is now investigating the collision, which happened around 8:49 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at Portage Avenue and Garry Street.
According to information provided to the IIU by the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were responding to a call for assistance and travelling westbound on Portage Avenue.
Police said the vehicle entered the intersection at Garry Street on a green light at the same time a woman riding northbound in the Garry Street bike lane entered the intersection.
The police vehicle and cyclist collided, knocking the woman to the ground.
Officers got out of the vehicle and provided first aid before the cyclist was taken to hospital. The IIU said she was treated for a fractured clavicle and bruising.
The Winnipeg Police Service notified the IIU about the incident on Friday, Aug. 8.
The IIU is required to investigate because the collision involving a police vehicle resulted in a serious injury.
