Between The Lines: Trevor Harris’ 40,000-yard milestone through Jake Maier’s eyes

Harris became just the 12th quarterback in CFL history to surpass 40,000 career passing yards, reaching the mark early in Saskatchewan’s win over the Ottawa Redblacks. While the accomplishment puts Harris among some of the league’s all-time passing greats, the veteran quarterback was quick to deflect the attention.

“To be able to do that on a professional level is something that just blows my mind,” Harris said. “I just try and stay focused on the small things.”

Harris added that he remains grateful for the opportunity to continue playing quarterback for the Roughriders.

“I never, ever, ever take it for granted,” he said. “I’m really thankful that I get to do this. To join the 40K club is pretty cool. I think it just means maybe I’m getting a little older though.”

The milestone was made a little more meaningful by the quarterback on the other side of the field. Ottawa’s Jake Maier spent the 2025 season as Harris’ backup in Saskatchewan before signing with the Redblacks in the offseason. Maier said Harris’ approach to preparation made a lasting impression during their time together.

“Trevor is the ultimate preparation guy,” Maier said. “Just has a really nice routine that he was gracious enough to pass on to me.”

Maier said the relationship between the quarterbacks in Saskatchewan extended beyond the football field, and that camaraderie has continued even after he left the organization.

“We’re still close today. We’re still really, really good friends,” Maier said.

Maier admitted he looked up to Harris during his time with the Roughriders and continues to stay in touch with the veteran quarterback throughout the season and offseason.

“We’re pretty close,” Maier said.

For Harris, the 40,000-yard milestone adds another accomplishment to an already impressive CFL career, but his focus remains on the next play and helping the Roughriders win.
