Police are investigating after a BMW that was stolen in Brampton was found on fire in Barrie.
The vehicle fire happened on Thursday morning in a parking lot on Esther Drive, the Barrie Police Service says, when a nearby resident reported hearing a “loud boom” around 4:20 a.m.
The witness reportedly saw flames and a large plume of smoke coming from a school parking lot. The fire was extinguished by around 6:45 a.m. and the vehicle was destroyed in the blaze, police say.
The black 2015 BMW had been stolen in Brampton earlier that day, and police say the registered owner still had the only set of keys with him.
A melted gas canister was located inside the vehicle, investigators said.
The blaze is considered “suspicious,” and police are asking anyone who may have seen the fire or has video footage of the vehicle to contact investigators.
