Shifting winds could increase activity on Quilpituk Creek wildfire

UPDATE: 6 p.m.
While the evacuation orders for the properties in the Quilpituk Creek wildfire area will remain in place, the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is finalizing re-entry planning to support a safe and coordinated return home.
The blaze remains at 1,238.8 hectares.
Structural Protection crews continue to perform tactical patrols and maintain established systems around the clock, according to the EOC.
Key priorities for crews include assessing danger trees along the Westside Road corridor, evaluating slope stability and restoring water service to the Killiney and Westshore Estates systems. Residents served by these systems will return under a boil water advisory until it is safe to lift.

The Quilpituk Creek wildfire remains out of control, with afternoon winds potentially increasing activity later in the day on Aug. 10.
The fire remains at an estimated 1,238 hectares in size, unchanged from the previous update by the BC Wildfire Service on Sunday, Aug. 9.
Heavy smoke from the fire is expected to remain in the area through the day.
Controlled burns that were planned to remove 100 hectares of unburnt fuel between the fire perimeter and established control lines on Aug. 9 weren’t able to be completed, and are instead aimed to be done today, if the conditions allow.
The burns, if they go through, will be supported ground crews, heavy equipment, and aviation resources working together.
As part of the Bradley Creek wildfire complex, there are currently 129 firefighters responding, 11 helicopters, 40 pieces of heavy equipment and 67 structure protection crews.
The Bradley Creek wildfire is considered held at 2,634.8 hectares.
