LOS ANGELES – Sometimes you only need one shot, and No. 6 Tennessee showed that, beating No. 4 UCLA on their single shot opportunity in the game. Volunteer forward Shae O’Rourke scored the game-winning goal in the 25th minute, knocking off their second Top 5 opponent in a week.Â
UCLA (1-1) outshot Tennessee (3-0) by a 17-1 count, including 13-0 in the second half, but could not find the equalizer. Bruin midfielder Oruha Hayashi nearly scored in the 52nd minute, ripping a shot from inside the box that forced a diving save by Tennessee goalkeeper Cayden Norris. On the ensuing corner kick, Meila Brewer’s header went wide. In the 55th minute, Bella Winn had a takeaway, but her shot after a give-and-go with Emma Egizii trickled just wide of goal. The Bruins had another good opportunity in the 72nd minute after Lily Boyden was fouled just outside of the box, but Val Vargas’s looping shot was off-target. UCLA also had a pair of shots saved in the first half, by Vargas in the 32nd minute and Kara Croone in the 43rd.Â
Tennessee made their one shot count. In the 25th minute, Ally Brown sent a long pass in to Sydney Miller, who then connected with O’Rourke at the top of the box. O’Rourke beat an onrushing Daphne Nakfoor with her shot to the far post, recording her fourth goal of the young season.Â
“We’re a young group, and we have to learn these things,” said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. “We made a critical error. It was a goal that we talked about preventing all week, and we didn’t do it. In that way, thia is a huge learning moment for us. That’s the frustrating part. But the very positive part is that, on paper, that’s the number six team in the country, and they just beat the number one team in the country, and we outshot them 17 shots to one and in the second half [13] to zero. So there were a lot of positives there.”
UCLA will face another challenge on Saturday on the road at No. 19 BYU. The match will take place at 7pm MT/6pm PT and will air on ESPN+.Â
