Dakota Fanning revisited 2024’s butter yellow trend in a midi dress by Mugler for her Tuesday night appearance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in New York City, promoting her new film “The Sun Never Sets.”

The Emmy Award-nominated “All Her Fault” actress opted for a bustier midi dress courtesy of the French luxury fashion house. The formfitting silhouette harkened back to 1950s hourglass frames with a subtle hint of sensuality, while the bustier cups were wholly ’80s Madonna-era inspired.
The thin straps and butter yellow tone of the satiny fabric gave the dress a distinct summertime vibe, an aesthetic that continued with Fanning’s footwear and jewelry. The actress wore Aquazzura glitter-effect slingback sandal pumps and accessorized with a Baignoire watch by Cartier — Fanning’s sister, Elle Fanning, serves as an ambassador to the French luxury brand.

As for glam, Dakota Fanning’s blond hair was styled by New York City-based colorist Alissa Frum with makeup by Erin Ayanian Monroe. Stylist Samantha McMillen, who also counts Elle and Michelle Pfeiffer among her clients, curated the actress’ late-night look.
The butter yellow trend popped on the red carpet in early 2024, continuing well into the spring season. A pale lemony hue that could nearly be conceived as a neutral, the color was embraced by such fashion houses and labels as Loewe, Miu Miu and McQueen, among others.

Actress Aubrey Plaza was among the first celebrities to endorse the color, wearing her viral “Post-it” note Loewe dress to the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in January 2024. Rihanna quickly followed suit with a McQueen midi dress in April, followed by Emily Ratajkowski’s satiny Dolce & Gabbana gown at the King’s Trust Global Gala.
Since its 2024 rise, the butter yellow color scheme has continued to appear at major events, though its stronghold has somewhat softened. Sabrina Carpenter gave the trend a turn in Dior for the French luxury fashion house’s 2027 cruise presentation in May, while Emma Stone sported Louis Vuitton’s iteration on the trend at the Golden Globe Awards back in January.
