A child critically injured after a vehicle hit a barrier on Highway 401 in Pickering has been taken to hospital.

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 remain closed in Pickering following a single-vehicle crash on Thursday afternoon that left a one-year-old infant critically injured.

Police say the crash happened near Brock Road around 2:20 p.m.

Ornge confirmed to CTV News Toronto that they are airlifting a pediatric patient with critical injuries from the scene to the Hospital for Sick Children.

There is no word when the eastbound lanes will reopen. Police say the closure is expected to remain in place for several hours.

The cause of the crash is not immediately known.
