Players to watch: Edmonton Elks

DB – Tyrell Ford

He is having an incredible season. At 5 interceptions, he is tied for first along with Calgary DB Ben Lambrosse. His vision to read the field and anticipate where the ball will be is one of his best attributes to the Edmonton defence. With Chad Kelly leading the league in interceptions, Tyrell Ford is capable of adding to his interception total.

WR – Austin Mack

With 766 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns, 16.3 average yards per catch, and 273 yards after the catch, Austin Mack has been the go-to target for Cody Fajardo.

RB – Justin Rankin

He has not been the same in the last few weeks, with his last 100-yard rushing game in Week 6 vs. Ottawa. He has hit a cold spell. With that said, he is one of the most valuable players in the Edmonton offence. He could have a breakout game contributing to both the running and passing game.

QB – Cody Fajardo

He is 2nd in passing yards with 2,808 and is averaging 312 passing yards per game. His 16 touchdown passes to 5 interceptions are pretty good stats at the halfway point of the season, through 9 games played. He rarely makes mistakes. The Toronto Argonauts have given up a lot of deep balls this season, resulting in big plays. Expect Cody Fajardo to test the Toronto secondary.

LB – Nick Anderson

He has been an anchor for the Edmonton defence. It was great to see his return to the lineup last week vs. Montreal. The duo of Nick Anderson and Joel Dublanko at the linebacker position has been a great fit for Edmonton this season. Expect Nick Anderson to have a great game vs. Toronto.

WR – Damonte Coxie

685 receiving yards, 2 touchdowns, 16.3 average yards per catch. He has great route-running and wins many one-on-one battles with defenders.

WR – Kevin Mital

The former University of Laval receiver has been a plug-and-play player for the Boatman since being drafted in 2024. He has been a clutch player in every season he has played. So far, Kevin Mital has 516 receiving yards and 1 touchdown.

WR – David Ungerer III

Another player who is a recipient of big plays at the right time. He can fool a lot of defenders and makes it look easy to get open. He is having another good season with 4 touchdowns and 481 receiving yards.

WR – Tyler Kahmann

He is a hidden gem that Toronto was able to land. The Argos do have one of the best wide receiver rooms in the CFL when analyzing the depth of a roster. Tyler Kahmann has come up with big plays at big moments of a game with 414 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns this season.

Keys to an Edmonton victory:

Make it difficult for Chad Kelly.

It’s no secret that his check-downs have been bad this season, as the number of interceptions is evident in 2026. When Chad Kelly is frustrated, he will force the ball. Forcing the ball leads to problems.

Do not get out-muscled.

It was on full display last week in Montreal. The Montreal offensive line won many battles vs. the Edmonton defence. The Elks need to match the level of play.

Win the turnover battle.

Edmonton has done a great job this season, winning a lot of turnovers. Dictate the play and force Toronto to make mistakes.

Get the running game going.

It has been a struggle with the running game for a few weeks now. Edmonton has to draw up some schemes to counter this problem and make the running game relevant again for the offence.

Prediction

The Elks had a back-to-back series with Saskatchewan, followed by last week with a great Montreal team. They are 1-2 in their last three games.

Now they host a Toronto team that has a few inconsistencies of its own.

Edmonton gets back into the win column. The running game will struggle but accumulate respectable numbers. It will be a close game. The main factor that will come into play is a better secondary than Toronto’s, which will result in winning the turnover battle.
