Vancouver FC extended their undefeated streak to six Friday in Langley, but it was a near thing, with a last-minute goal producing a 1-1 tie against Pacific.
VFC’s Terran Campbell scored against his old club in the 87th minute to secure the 1-1 draw.
Earlier in the game, Pacific’s Ronan Kratt managed to cut inside on his right foot and fire a low shot, one that curled into the bottom corner to put his team up 1-0 36 minutes in.
After a frustrating start to the season, the Eagles are now third in the standings.
Goalkeeper Callum Irving has captained the Eagles since the club kicked off in 2023.
“We’re getting rewarded a bit for the effort and staying the course,” Irving said after the win over Forge.
“When you look at the evolution of our team this season from the start we had, where we were giving up late goals, not quite getting those wins or even the draws we were looking for, to now having five [wins] in a row — seven in the last eight — we’re finding ways to get over the line,” Irving said.
Nash has spoken repeatedly about changing the mentality of the team. In other years, he’s suggested, Vancouver might not have believed as strongly as they do now that they can beat anybody in the CPL.
“It’s part of the culture we built this year,” Nash said. “When I came in last year, I think the culture and maybe the attitude of some wasn’t quite right. A lot of that goes into this.”
Vancouver is a more experienced team this season, with an average squad age of 25.2 (up from 21.2 last year). Nash brought in veteran players like Mousset, Tom Field and Morey Doner, who have complemented the likes of Nicolas Mezquida and Irving.
Vancouver head out on the road for their next match, to take on Atlético Ottawa in a midweek clash at TD Place on Wednesday, Aug. 19.
Their next home game is Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. against Supra Du Quebec at the Stadium at Langley Events Centre.
