Omar is an experienced editor and writer who sees life and storytelling as one and the same — there’s always a story to tell. He’s helped shape features, headlines, and coverage across movies, TV, gaming, and the internet’s favorite fandom rabbit holes. When he’s not working on the next piece, he’s usually getting a little too invested in whatever he’s into at the moment.
For most of the past decade, the top titles on the list of all-time box office earners have been relatively fixed, with the Avatar and Avengers movies holding their ground and a newcomer breaking through only occasionally. Animation has accounted for most of the recent arrivals, first with Ne Zha 2 and then Zootopia 2. There had been a growing sense that we might not see another live-action Hollywood blockbuster break through that upper echelon. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has dismantled that assumption, and as of this week, it’s no longer a matter of trajectory or projection.
Per Box Office Mojo figures through August 13, Destin Daniel Cretton’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has grossed $1.722 billion worldwide, enough to move past Inside Out 2‘s $1.698 billion and into the top 10 highest-grossing films ever released. The milestone lands barely a year after Marvel’s theatrical standing looked far less secure. In 2025, the MCU released three films and none fully met expectations, with Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World in particular reviving questions about superhero fatigue. The reversal since then has been sharp. Summer 2026 has already outpaced the Barbenheimer year and Hollywood is tracking toward its strongest annual gross since the pandemic.
Brand New Day took down Avengers: Endgame’s seven-year-old record, setting a new pace for the fastest-ever sprints to $500 million and $700 million domestic, while notching a $144.5 million second weekend that only Endgame and The Force Awakens have ever topped. Roughly 60 percent of its total has come from international markets, where the film has already become Sony’s biggest release ever and, notably, the highest-grossing Hollywood movie in Indian box office history. China leads all territories, with the UK, Mexico, and India close behind.
The $2 billion mark now looks well within reach, though the more ambitious targets floating around — a run at Titanic’s $2.26 billion or the first-ever $1 billion domestic total — remain far more speculative and will depend on numbers that are difficult to forecast. Historically, front-loaded superhero films tend to fade once the opening-rush audience has been served, and the late-August slate will bring real competition for screens even if nothing on it looks like a direct threat. Then again, history also said Endgame’s opening record was untouchable. Brand New Day’s 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and favorable word of mouth around its more grounded story may be giving it some appeal beyond the core Marvel audience.
