Police in the United States say a man is safe after he was allegedly abducted in Winnipeg and driven hundreds of kilometres across the international border and several state lines.
On Saturday morning, officials in North Dakota received a report that a 31-year-old Manitoba man had abducted a 37-year-old man in Winnipeg, North Dakota State Patrol said in a statement on social media.
The suspect’s vehicle was identified using cameras across multiple locations. Police found it in Alexandria, Minn. — about 460 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg — by using cellphone locations, messages to family and friends and licence plate reader technology, the release said.
The 37-year-old victim was able to break free in Alexandria, running into a nearby store before the suspect was arrested by local police.
The incident is still under investigation, police said.
North Dakota State Patrol said officials worked across international and state borders, co-ordinating with local, state, federal and Canadian law enforcement partners to find the men.
“Coordination across international and state borders occurred seamlessly and without hesitation, bringing this abduction to a safe conclusion,” police said.
