Toronto’s offense couldn’t get out of its own way, and it cost them. Turnovers handed Edmonton’s defense extra possessions all game long, and by the time it was over, both head coach Mike Miller and quarterback Chad Kelly were fielding the same question from different angles: what happens when the big-play offense stops managing the football.

Kelly threw a pick-six on one of his two turnovers on the day, and reporters wanted to know if Miller ever thought about pulling him afterward. He didn’t.

“No, I did not consider that at that time. Uh, was going to try to continue to work and try to build some momentum, and then at that point after that, I just thought, well, here’s — that was the one more drive, and then I wanted to put Nick in,” Miller said.

Kelly, for his part, made clear he wanted to stay in and finish the job even after the pick-six. “Yeah, of course, definitely did,” he said when asked directly.

A Turnover Problem That Won’t Go Away

The turnovers were the story of the game, and Miller didn’t dodge it. Edmonton’s defense feasted on extra possessions all afternoon, and Toronto’s own defense had to bail the offense out repeatedly.

“Yeah, it’s just trying to manage game situations, uh, secure the football, uh, making good decisions. And, uh, yeah, that we talk about it every day. We talk about it in practice, uh, we talk about it in the film room. We talk about it on the sidelines, but yeah, we certainly clearly have to do a better job,” Miller said.

Kelly echoed the same theme when asked whether the offense needs to prioritize ball security over its usual aggressive approach. He didn’t want to abandon the big-play identity, but he admitted the margin for error is thinner than the results suggested.

“I think at the end of the day, you know, you got to execute what’s called, right? So of course you got to manage. You got to manage every down, you know, even when it’s third and one, we got to manage, right? I think it’s just at the end of the day, we all got to be better, myself included, and then just understand it’s, it’s, you know, it could be that one play in the first quarter that is a deciding factor in the game, right? Because if you lose the momentum, you lose the energy, that could be the game,” Kelly said.

Kelly-DeMonte Connection Hits a Rough Patch

A week after apparently clicking, Kelly and DeMonte ran into miscues and errors that reporters pressed him on. Kelly kept the answer simple.

“We just both got to be better. We got to be on the same page. We gotta, we gotta work harder,” Kelly said.

Miller Still Proud of the Defense

While the offense drew the tough questions, Miller had nothing but praise for a Toronto defense that had to play from behind the sticks all game because of the extra possessions Edmonton kept getting handed.

“I am very proud of our defense. Uh, I felt they continued to fight to the very end. They played hard, they played physical, and they played together. And, uh, so I’m proud of them. I wouldn’t want any other defense in this league. They got all those extra possessions and never complained. They just go out and continue to play hard,” Miller said.

He also credited Edmonton for making life difficult on both sides of the ball, calling them a team with “multiple weapons” and a level of respect that came with knowing this one was going to be a battle.

Bright Spots: Herzlough and Bolden Step Up

Amid the frustration, Miller pointed to two players who impressed him — Herzlough, who was playing his first game, and Bubba Bolden, who’s continued to carve out a role.

“He’s a really tough kid. He’s a great competitor, plays with great passion. He’s a guy that has great passion for his teammates. And, uh, you know, he came in and did exactly what he shows in practice. He’s a hard worker, and we’re lucky to have him,” Miller said of Herzlough, who made a big catch down the seam.

“Same thing, like a Herzl, uh, works very hard, uh, he’s a generous teammate, loves being an Argo, loves his teammates, great passion to play this game. He’s a very physical player, you’d be hard-pressed to find a tougher guy… Bubba has stepped in and taken full advantage of opportunities,” Miller said of Bolden.

Kicking Situation Still Up in the Air

Miller was also asked about the kicking game after a strong showing from Lidster, and whether that opens the door for Laram to return once healthy. True to form, Miller wouldn’t commit to anything beyond the next film session.

“I take everything day by day… I have to evaluate the film. We evaluate it one day at a time, and then we’ll make decisions that we feel are best for the football team,” Miller said.

What’s Next

Toronto now has to turn the page fast. The turnover issue isn’t new, and both Miller and Kelly know it’s the difference between wins and results like this one. With the Argonauts sitting in a crowded middle of the East, cleaning up the ball security problem before their next matchup on the schedule is non-negotiable if they want to keep pace in the standings.
