Winnipeg’s newest baby gibbon officially has a name.
Last week, Winnipeggers were asked to help choose a name for the baby, who was born to his mother, Maya, on July 23, 2026.
Four names to choose from
The Assiniboine Park Zoo offered four different names for the public to choose from, including:
Taman, which means garden or park
Zahir, which means bright, luminous, or helper
Kien, which means strong, firm or brave
Suwanto, which means golden or precious

Winnipeggers choose Suwanto
In the end, Winnipeggers went with Suwanto, which is associated with qualities such as goodness, purity, and value.
“Thank you to everyone who voted,” wrote the Assiniboine Park Zoo in a social post.
Suwanto settling in with mom Maya
Suwanto is almost a month old now, and the animal care and veterinary teams continue to monitor the family closely while taking a hands-off approach, allowing Mom Maya to take the lead in caring for her little one.
“You can visit the gibbon family at the zoo!” wrote the Assiniboine Park Zoo. “We promise Suwanto is even cuter in person.”
