A popular community hub and cafe announced it will close up shop next month in Mississauga.

Studio.89, a non-profit fair trade, vegan cafe and community hub, announced they will close their brick-and-mortar location on Sept. 14.

“Thank you for supporting our youth-led community hub for the past 12 years,” Studio.89 said on Instagram. “We wouldn’t be what we are today without you.”

The cafe is a social enterprise that sells goods to support its social, cultural and environmental mission. The menu includes a range of espresso drinks, coffee, smoothies, sandwiches and treats.

The organization has rallied for support in the past. In 2018, a $50,000 donation helped keep the cafe open.

While the physical location at 2520 Eglinton Ave. W. will close, Studio.89 plans to continue its work.

Going forward, they will continue to host community programs, workshops and events in venues across Mississauga, they said on Instagram. Programs include art as a tool for social change, climate action, youth leadership, youth and senior connections and job skills.

In the past, the cafe opened its doors and provided a free community space to local organizers. They plan to continue with community partnerships and help organizations find other spaces in the city.

Studio.89 hopes supporters will continue to be part of the organization by becoming a monthly donor to help keep free programs, workshops and events alive at venues around the city, they said.

“We’re so proud of every young person who grew personally and professionally within these walls, and we hope to stay your go-to charity for guidance for years to come,” the organization said on Instagram.

People can sign up for a free newsletter to stay in the loop.

They also hope folks will visit before the cafe closes.

“Drop by before we close, grab your favourite treats and comfort drinks, and keep an eye out for our garage sale as we pack up the space,” Studio.89 said.
