SURREY, N.D. (KMOT) – Surrey held its first day of school on Monday and welcomed a new superintendent, Steve Bucks, to the community.
Bucks moved from Montana to Surrey earlier this year, where he entered his new role at the school.
He has worked in education for 30 years, nine of them as a superintendent.
Bucks said he’s hopeful that the school will eventually be able to make necessary repairs and upgrades to ensure the building is up to fire code and meets the growing student population. A property tax measure narrowly failed at the ballot box earlier this year.
Overall, he said he hopes to bring positivity to the home of the Mustangs.
“It’s nice to see kids coming back. Teachers are excited, kids are excited, parents are excited. I think Surrey has a lot to offer, so I’m going to bring the positive,” said Steve Bucks.
Bucks also plans to organize new groups at the school.
Surrey has roughly 450 students.
