Fady Dagher, Montreal’s police chief since 2023, has been elected president of the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police for a two-year term, the Montreal force said Tuesday.
He was named to the role at the association’s annual summit in Edmonton. He succeeds Thomas Carrique, commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police, who became president in 2024.
In the role, Dagher will take the lead in setting the association’s national public safety priorities, as well as representing the chiefs in debates about matters affecting communities across the country.
When he was sworn in as Montreal’s police chief, Dagher became the first racialized person to lead the force.
Originally of Lebanese origin, he grew up in Côte d’Ivoire. He speaks six languages: English, French, Italian, Spanish, Arabic and Dioula.
