Surrey shooting was extortion-related: police

Investigators have deemed the early morning Aug. 12 shooting outside a home in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood is now considered extortion-related.
“However, that may change depending on how the investigation proceeds,” said Surrey Police Staff Sgt. Lindsey Houghton.
Police were called to a home in the 7600-block of 124 Street around 10:34 a.m. on Aug. 12. The homeowner had “found what they believed to be gunshot damage to an outbuilding on their property,” a Surrey police news release at the time said. The shooting was believed to have taken place sometime overnight.
Upon arrival, police confirmed the damage was caused by gunfire. There were no reported injuries.
SPS is asking anyone who was in the area at the time and saw any suspicious activity, has dashcam footage, or lives in the area and has CCTV footage, or if you have information concerning the incident, to contact SPS’s non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file number 26-85351 (SP).
As of Aug. 17, there have been 138 reported extortions, 22 shots fired, two arsons and 74 victims (39 repeat) in Surrey this year.
