UP Health System – Portage adds technology to improve accuracy, comfort in breast cancer surgery

  • August 20, 2026

PORTAGE, Mich. (WLUC) – UP Health System – Portage is introducing new technology that will help surgeons accurately locate and remove breast tumors while improving patient comfort.

The technology is called the Magseed marker, and it offers a more accurate and less invasive alternative to traditional guidewire localization, according to a Wednesday afternoon press release from UPHS – Portage.

The release says breast-conserving surgery, or lumpectomy or partial mastectomy, is a common treatment option for patients diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer or those with a suspicious lump identified through routine screening. The release says this method removes the tumor while preserving as much healthy breast tissue as possible.

The tool allows surgeons to mark tumors ahead of surgery.

“Magseed is a tiny metallic seed, just 1 mm by 5 mm—smaller than a grain of rice—that can be placed directly into the tumor days, weeks, or even months before the procedure. Once in place, it cannot be dislodged or damaged,” the release says.

During the surgery, a probe detects the seed’s magnetic signal so the surgeon can find the tumor’s exact location. The release says this method replaces traditional wire localization, which could shift before surgery.

“We take pride in delivering compassionate and innovative care to the Western Upper Peninsula and beyond,” said Ryan Heinonen, chief executive officer of UPHS – Portage. “The introduction of Magseed technology aligns with our mission of making communities healthier. Patients now have access to the latest surgical techniques close to home and can feel confident in the quality of care they receive.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the U.S., with about 1 in 8 women diagnosed in their lifetime.
