SkyTrain guideway almost at Langley-Surrey border

The huge gantry assembling the local section of the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain line has almost reached the Surrey-Langley border at 196 Street and Fraser Highway.
As of Tuesday, Aug. 18 the launching gantry, dubbed the Langley Launcher, had passed the 64 Avenue intersection and reached approximately 193 Street along Fraser Highway.
The four launching gantries working on the 16 km extension all sit on top of the concrete pylons built to hold the guideway, and hoist segments up into place one at a time. Once a section is completed, the entire gantry moves forward along the row of pylons and assembles another section.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit had previously estimated that the gantry would reach the site of the Willowbrook Station, around the 19700 block of Fraser Highway, by sometime this autumn.
Meanwhile, progress continued on building the pylons that hold up the guideway, with work underway in particular along the laneway east of the Langley Bypass. This is where the SkyTrain’s route leaves Fraser Highway. After the line crosses Production Way, it will follow Industrial Avenue east to the final stop at the future Langley City Centre station at 203 Street.

Despite the extensive work underway, there are only a few upcoming changes to traffic patterns, as most of the pylon and guideway work is now underway.
Many of the existing traffic disruptions, including lane reductions along much of Fraser Highway east of the Bypass, and one-way eastbound-only traffic on Industrial Avenue, have been in place for months and remain in force.
Upcoming local changes include the closure of access to 68 Avenue north of Fraser Highway from approximately Aug. 24 to Sept. 1, and a planned temporary shutdown of 201A Street south of Industrial from 8 to 11 p.m. on Sept. 15, as heavy equipment crosses the street.
Once the pylons and guideways are largely complete, crews will still be building the actual trackway – work has already begun on this in some areas – and the electrical systems to drive the trains. The eight stations will also have to be completed, and trains tested on the new line.
The $6 billion Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension is projected to be complete in late 2029, a little over three years from now.
