Since the beginning of August, the City of Pointe-Claire has carried out soil tests on its clay tennis courts. These tests follow the announcement by several other municipalities that closed tennis courts after conducting soil tests to evaluate the concentration of asbestos in the Har-Tru product, which is the agent used to maintain our clay court surfaces.

Based on the soil test results, the City must temporarily close the clay tennis courts at Clearpoint park as a precaution, due to issues identified with the laboratory samples. New laboratory tests are currently underway, and we will share the results as soon as they are available. The results at Valois Park show that all courts meet government standards.

When asbestos is present, the standard set by the federal Ministries of Health and Environment and the Gouvernement du Québec, requires that the concentration be below 0.1%.

Please note that only the tennis courts at Valois and Clearpoint Parks are clay courts. The other tennis courts are not affected.

We would also like to inform you that the maintenance products used by City staff on the baseball and softball fields are not supplied by this company.

Measures Taken in Early August

During the period when the soil was being tested, the City implemented several measures to reduce potential risks:

Har-Tru use was suspended for clay tennis court maintenance.Mandatory use of individual protective equipment for employees or volunteers from the private Clubs responsible for maintaining the tennis courts.Communication with private tennis Clubs officials to inform their members of the situation.Communication with the maintenance product supplier to receive updated usage instructions and the report of their ongoing tests in their facilities.Open Tennis Courts
