SERIES HISTORY

The Niners are 5-4 in the series history versus Wofford, including winning the last four meetings. In the last matchup in 2023, Charlotte took home a 1-0 victory fueled by a goal from Natsuki Ogata in the 68th minute.

SCOUTING WOFFORD

At the 73rd minute in a 0-0 match, lightning suspended play between Wofford and Gardner-Webb in the season opener. Last year, Wofford went 6-11-2 before losing in the Southern Conference Semifinals. Goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster returns for the Terriers after starting all 19 games last season. SoCon Also returning is All-Freshman Team selection Samuel Byron, who was third on the team with three goals and three assists.  

LAST TIME OUT

In front of 1,583 fans in attendance, Charlotte Men’s Soccer clicked on all cylinders to begin the 2026 season, cruising to a 3-0 win over the No. 23 nationally ranked West Virginia Mountaineers at Jen Gaber Field. The win marks the first ranked victory to open the season in Charlotte’s history and the 21st ranked win in the Kevin Langan era.

COACH’S CORNER

“Preparation for the West Virginia match started in the spring,” said Kevin Langan. “We pushed the guys in practice and preseason to see what we are made of. We stayed strong after the red card and played together. This team is deep with talent. I was happy with how we pressed and our overall play. We stayed true to ourselves. A great start to the season, and we’ll need to ride this momentum into Monday.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

Four newcomers were featured in Charlotte’s first starting lineup of the season, including goalkeeper Alex Svetanoff, who finished the night with three saves. Defenders Vilmer Brunskog and Eirikur Beck anchored the back line that produced a clean sheet, while forward Mikey Raggett proved to be the man of the match with two goals.

In the 24th minute, after great ball movement on the left side of the field by Natsuki Ogata and Beck, Raggett found the back of the net for his first goal as a 49er to give Charlotte the early lead.

Just before halftime, Larry Noel’s goal was perhaps the highlight of the match. After regaining possession at midfield, Noel launched a shot over an out-of-position West Virginia goalkeeper Toby Mawer to extend Charlotte’s lead to 2-0 at halftime.

“Brilliant night to start the season,” said Mikey Raggett. “Clean sheet on the defensive end, three goals offensively, and an all-around great team performance against a ranked team. Our student section fueled the success, and their support meant a lot to us.”

A total of 1,183 students packed the stands, marking the highest student attendance in 15 seasons and the second-highest overall attendance in that same timespan.

“The crowd’s reaction after our goals tonight was special,” said Larry Noel. “We clicked on all cylinders in our first home match of the season. It was a true home-field advantage tonight.”

As the second half started, Raggett once again found himself in the right place at the right time. A header from Wiktor Pucilowski was perfectly placed at Raggett’s feet, and he floated the ball over the head of Mawer for his second goal of the night, putting Charlotte up 3-0.

In the 77th minute, Charlotte goalkeeper Alex Svetanoff came out of the box and collided with West Virginia’s Julen Recalde, leading to a red card. Tom Carmeli came in for the 49ers to finish the remainder of the match, making one save to preserve the 3-0 clean-sheet victory.
