Why it’s time to fall for autumn in Campbell River

Is there an ideal time to get away to northern Vancouver Island? We all have our preferences, of course, but for a vacation that balances accessible, outdoor adventure with rich cultural and culinary experiences, it’s time to discover autumn in Campbell River.

This west coast playground is beautiful year-round, of course, and it’s less than two hours from the BC Ferries terminal in Nanaimo or a 3 1/2-hour drive north from Victoria. Ferries book up quickly, so it’s a good idea to reserve your spot before travelling. You can also walk onto Hullo Ferry from Vancouver Harbour to Nanaimo Harbour, making sure to hire a car from Nanaimo to Campbell River in advance. 

Until Sept. 30, board Harbour Air in downtown Vancouver to reach Campbell River in just an hour, or fly WestJet’s non-stop flight from Calgary through October, and begin your Island escape with a breathtaking view from above.

To the west, past abundant lakes, rivers and coastal forests, are the rugged peaks of Strathcona Provincial Park, attracting late spring hikers and winter snow enthusiasts in equal measure. To the west, the renowned Discovery Sound, a jumping-off point for fishing, paddling tours and whale and wildlife-watching experiences, buoyed by a temperate climate that begs for shoulder season travel – even better without the rush of summer travellers.

So now, as summer winds down and we plan for fall, here’s a look at what autumn holds for this Island gem.

Angle for adventure – Campbell River earned its well-deserved title as the salmon capital of the world, but the mighty tyee isn’t the only reason to break out the rod and reel. Stop by one of town’s outfitters for a little local knowledge, then see what’s biting in a nearby river or lakes. Saltwater anglers can cast a line off directly from downtown’s Discovery Pier, extending 150 ft from shore, or book a fishing charter. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of a passing orca on your travels! And don’t forget your fishing license – purchase online or stop by River Sportsman or Tyee Marine & Outdoors to pick it up when you arrive.

Take in the view from here – Speaking of orca, nature is abundant in this corner of Vancouver Island, whether you’re taking in the eagles soaring overhead or the whales, porpoises, seals and other wildlife off shore. Just minutes from town is the must-visit Elk Falls Provincial Park, with its easy trail and suspension bridge overlooking the falls. Venture a little farther to take in the rugged beaches of Quadra and Cortes islands or amp up the challenge with Strathcona’s mountain trails.

Explore a thriving cultural landscape – Experiences aren’t only found outdoors in Campbell River.
