A Night of Romantasy Magic Coming to South Surrey

South Surrey and White Rock book lovers are being invited to step into the combined world of romance and fantasy on Sept. 25.
The Indigo located in Grandview Corners is preparing to host a Romantasy Crafts Night, giving readers a chance to get creative, test their genre knowledge and connect with fellow book lovers.
This evening is said to feature book-cover bedazzling, bookmark making, Romantasy trivia and an optional costume contest, with prizes available for trivia and costume contest winners.
Sonia Dhungana, customer experience leader at Grandview Corners Indigo, said the event is part of an optional Romantasy event series being held at Indigo stores across the country.
“Anyone is welcome. The theme is Romantasy but you can bring in any book to bedazzle and still learn a bit about the genre and meet some fellow book lovers,” Dhungana said in an interview with Peace Arch News.
Dhungana explained that guests will need to bring their own book to bedazzle at this event but craft supplies will all be included with the $20 ticket. Bookmark making is also open to everyone, and Dhungana said the dressing up portion is completely optional.
Dhungana shared that there has been plenty of planning behind the scenes in preparation for this evening. She said that staff have been researching different craft ideas and have tested various bedazzling kits to determine which ones would work best and be the most efficient for attendees.
“One of our team members is researching quotes and different patterns for bookmark making,” Dhungana said.
Currently the Grandview Corners team are at the stage of working on trivia questions, deciding on prizes and promoting the event both in-store and through social media.
Dhungana shared that the team has hosted similar events before, including at DIY stenciled book-edges event that was said to have sold out and was well received by the attendees.
This time, the focus is on Romantasy – a genre combining elements of romance and fantasy – with the event taking place shortly before the release of the next instalment in the popular A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Dhungana noted there are also several other Romantasy series that are also releasing new instalments this fall.
“We are trying to celebrate and build excitement around the genre,” she said.
Dhungana said her team is especially looking forward to seeing the costumes attendees create and emphasized once again that the dress up portion is not required.
“Some of our staff are big Romantasy readers so they are also excited for a Romantasy night,” shared Dhungana.
The bigger goal, she said, is to create an affordable evening where people can have fun, learn a new craft and meet others with similar interests.
“People should come to this event for several reasons, the first being to have fun and have a good time,” Dhungana said. “People can meet other like-minded people from the community and enjoy learning a new craft on a budget.”
Dhungana shared that her team is hoping this event will be the beginning of more community-focused nights for local book lovers.
“This is the first time we got to design an event by ourselves and we are excited to bring together a group of people with the same interests and have a good time,” she said.
If the event is successful, Dhungana said the team hopes to organize more similar events for members of the community.
