A new program aimed at combating Islamophobia in Brampton and Mississauga is receiving more than $95,000 in provincial funding.
Zee Hamid, MPP for Milton, announced Wednesday that $95,100 is being provided to Building Multicultural Communities for its “Safe Voices Peel” initiative.
The funding comes through the Safer and Vital Communities Grant and will support a program that trains youth ambassadors in hate crime prevention, community safety and bystander intervention.
The initiative will operate in both Brampton and Mississauga, with organizers partnering with Peel Regional Police, Brampton Library, Our Place Peel and other local community groups.
The goal is to equip young people with the skills and knowledge to help promote safer and more inclusive communities while addressing Islamophobia at the grassroots level.
“Building safer communities starts at the grassroots level,” Hamid said in announcing the funding.
The initiative is expected to bring together youth and community organizations to help raise awareness about hate prevention and encourage residents to take an active role in creating safer communities.
The $95,100 investment is part of Ontario’s Safer and Vital Communities Grant, which supports community-based initiatives focused on public safety and stronger communities.
Further details about the timeline and the number of youth who will participate in the Safe Voices Peel program were not immediately available.
