Williams Lake man charged in fatal Highway 1 crash near Lytton

A Williams Lake man has been charged following a fatal crash south of Lytton last year that killed two people.
According to an RCMP press release, on Aug. 15, 2025, just before 5 p.m., a black Ford SUV collided with a grey GMC pickup on Highway 1, just south of Lytton.
Two people were killed and four others were injured in the crash. Both vehicles were destroyed by fire.
Police said during the weeks following the collision, the conduct of the investigation was transferred to BC Highway Patrol. The results were later forwarded to the BC Prosecution Service.
On Aug. 6, 2026, 44-year-old Joel Chenier was charged with driving without due care and attention under Section 144(1)(a) of the BC Motor Vehicle Act.
RCMP said Chenier and the occupants of his vehicle included three of the people injured in the crash and one of those who died.
Chernier has been served with a summons to appear in Lillooet Provincial Court on Sept. 15, 2026.
