Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day quits B.C. Conservative caucus

Courtenay-Comox MLA Brennan Day is leaving the B.C. Conservative Party, becoming the fifth caucus member to go in less than two weeks as the party continues to melt down under new Leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

Day says he has lost confidence in Findlay’s “judgment, conduct, and ethical standards,” and criticized the actions of people she has “chosen to surround herself” with.

“We can’t condone this behaviour,” he told Black Press Media. “We’re not Tea Party North. That’s not what I was elected to do.”

Day plans to sit as an Independent, saying he entered politics to serve his constituency and plans to continue to do so.

“They deserve an MLA who conducts himself honourably, acts with integrity, and is prepared to stand by the values he was elected to carry to Victoria,” he said.

This news comes amid an exodus of sitting MLAs from the Conservative caucus and turmoil within the party.

Day is the second to quit on Wednesday (Aug. 26), following Richmond-Bridgeport MLA Teresa Wat.

All five MLAs who have left in the past two weeks say they plan to sit as Independents, at least initially. Kamloops Centre MLA Peter Milobar and Delta South MLA Ian Paton have said they plan to form a new party.

On the party side, almost the entire executive, including party president Aisha Estey and executive director Angelo Isidorou, has quit in the past month.

Many mid- and low-level staff members from both the caucus and party have also quit or been removed from their posts.

On Wednesday, Findlay even fired one of her own hires, former Republican Party of Alberta staffer Apollo Chung, who was working as the operations director for the Conservative caucus.
