Residents and their city councillor say they’re opposed to a proposed infill development that would add three 20-storey apartment buildings to an east Mississauga neighbourhood.
The development is proposed for 4100 Ponytrail Dr. and 1850 Rathburn Rd. E., on the border with the Etobicoke area of Toronto, and includes a total of 695 residential units split among the three highrises.
Two 18-storey apartment buildings already exist on the site and approval was previously granted for construction of a third highrise, which will rise 25 storeys and house 283 units, according to the City of Mississauga.
If the development is approved, it would increase the number of residential units at the site to 1,365. The proposal calls for 40 per cent of the units to be two bedrooms in size or larger.

Ward 3 Coun. Chris Fonseca said in an Aug. 11 letter to residents who had earlier reached out to her with concerns about the development that she agrees with their position.
“Similar to many of you, while I support responsible growth, the scale of this proposal represents significant overdevelopment,” she wrote in the letter. “Adding multiple highrise towers to an already-dense site creates severe cumulative impacts on our traffic, local infrastructure and neighbourhood character. Growth cannot come at the expense of our existing community and as currently proposed, this development is simply incompatible with the surrounding neighbourhood.”
The councillor said a public information meeting on the proposed development will be held on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. at city hall. Residents are invited to attend either in person or online.
No final decision regarding the application will be made at the meeting, Fonseca noted.

“This meeting is an opportunity for residents and me to formally put on record our opposition to this development,” she said.
Fonseca said residents’ concerns are related to traffic, stormwater and wastewater capacity, electrical infrastructure, parking, shadows, noise, green space, tree canopy and aviation.
She added the community is not opposed to development or additional housing, but is asking for “responsible and sustainable growth that respects the character and established planning framework of the neighbourhood.”
