Businesses, golfers gather at Sunset Ranch Golf Club to raise funds for Kelowna Gospel Mission

The Kelowna Gospel Mission Charity Golf Classic teed off at Sunset Ranch Golf and Country Club on Friday, Aug. 28, bringing together over 120 golfers from a variety of different businesses.
The annual event supports the organization’s life-saving programs and services for people in Kelowna experiencing homelessness, as well as people in need throughout the community.
Kelowna Gospel Mission Senior Manager of Resource Development, Spencer Larsen, tells Black Press Media the money raised helps its outreach program, dental program and housing for people in transition.
“We have four homes that house people in transition, and then it helps our KGM dentals, which serves 2,900 people a year from Coldstream all the way to Osoyoos. Our dental care and our outreach team is serving hundreds every single day,” explained Larsen.
The Charity Golf Classic has become a staple for Kelowna Gospel Mission, with funds raised in previous years reaching as high as $80,000 from a single day of golf.
With growing demand for services for people experiencing homelessness in Kelowna, the goal is always to raise as much money as possible so the organization can keep helping those in need. But that’s not the only goal in mind, according to Larsen.
“(The Charity Golf Classic) is a big part of our fundraising events over the course of the year. But also the importance here is the event is a way for people to learn about the work we do,” said Larsen.
“We have new sponsors that came on this year, and it gives them a chance to be able to learn more about what KGM does… It helps get people connected to help volunteer or maybe donate in the future. That’s always the goal, but spreading awareness about the work we do for the people we serve is priority one.”
New sponsors and long-term sponsors hit the course at 10 a.m., including Source Furniture’s part-owner Michael Fraser, who was happy to return this summer to support the cause in his community.
“This is our sixth year of being a major sponsor. We have three owners and all three of us just believe in backing the Kelowna Gospel Mission as it is very important to our community. We will do anything we can to hopefully make it better and raise money for them,” said Fraser before hitting the golf course.
The day of golf was a Texas Scramble, spreading everyone across the course for a shotgun start, which included 18 holes of golf, breakfast, lunch, prizes and different ways to donate.
Sunset Ranch Head Golf Professional, Keith Martin, said the course was happy to provide a space for the event as it has become one of their biggest and most important tournaments of the year.
“It’s just great support for all the causes. They help out in the community, and it’s nice to see all the business owners that help sponsor this tournament and everything that we can do to help Kelowna,” said Martin after tee-off.
