$14.28M pay bump in Surrey Police union deal over 4 years

Surrey Police Board and Surrey Police Union have reached a new four-year collective agreement hailed for labour and cost certainty during “a significant period” in the Surrey Police Service (SPS) transition.

In a joint statement, the board and union say the deal, covering the term Jan. 1, 2025 to Dec. 31, 2028, includes a general wage increase in line with other municipal police departments for 2025 and 2026, plus general increases for 2027 (4.25 per cent) and 2028 (4.0 per cent).

The agreement is “aligned with the SPB’s overall costing mandate for parity with Vancouver Police wage and benefit improvements negotiated in the fall of 2025,” reads a statement Friday, Aug. 28.

The total increase for Surrey Police is approximately $14.283 million, or 13 per cent of baseline wages, which was included in the 2026 operating budget.

“The four-year settlement will also provide labour and cost certainty during a significant period in the Surrey Police Service (SPS) transition, including the assumption of responsibility for policing in Guildford/Fleetwood, continued recruitment and retention of experienced officers and recruits, and the transition to a new Chief Constable,” the statement reads.

Union president Ryan Buhrig and police board chair Perm Jawanda both applaud the agreement, as does Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke.

The deal “recognizes the important work police officers do to keep Surrey safe and supports the continued development of a strong municipal police service,” Locke stated. “I want to thank both sides for their efforts and commitment in reaching this outcome.”
