Police are investigating an alleged attempted arson at a restaurant on Jean-Talon Street near 22nd Avenue in Montreal’s Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension borough.
Montreal Police (SPVM) received a 911 call at around 3 a.m. regarding a suspect who allegedly intended to set fire to a business.
When officers arrived at the scene, there were no signs of a fire.
According to preliminary information provided by a witness, the suspect was allegedly seen smashing a window of the restaurant in an attempt to set a fire inside. The suspect fled after being caught in the act by a citizen, before police arrived.
Some incendiary material was found at the scene. Damage to the building was minor.
The investigation has been transferred to the Montreal police arson unit.
The scene has been secured for investigators, who are expected to attend during the day to analyze it and try to determine the exact circumstances of the incident.
Investigators will also look into possible surveillance cameras in the area.
There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
