Same story, different week for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. A fourth-quarter lead slipped away, the offense couldn’t finish drives when it mattered, and now Hamilton is staring at a schedule where there’s no more room for these kinds of losses. Head coach Scott Milanovich, quarterback Tre Ford and receiver Destin Talbert all pointed to the same problem after the game — a team that had its foot in the door and couldn’t push through it.

“We had a lead in the 4th quarter. We weren’t able to finish it off,” Milanovich said. “I wasn’t thrilled with our mood at halftime, but we picked it up and played better in the 2nd half.”

Second-Half Drives Kept Stalling

Ford was the most direct about where things fell apart. Hamilton’s offense could move the ball, but moving it and finishing it turned out to be two different problems.

“We had the turnover, which was nice. We were able to score a touchdown off of that. But again, a lot more, I think, 2-and-outs. We had a couple. We didn’t really score any other touchdowns other than one off the interception. I think we had another field goal or 2. So we just weren’t finishing drives,” Ford said.

Ford didn’t dodge his own role in it either, pointing to one specific miss that could have changed the complexion of a drive. “I know I missed a throw to Mitch on the sideline there, which would have put us in a good situation to maybe score a touchdown right again, or walk away with another 3, but taking more time off the clock,” he said.

Second and Long Kept Killing Drives

Milanovich zeroed in on the run game as the root issue, specifically what happened on early downs. Losing yards on 2nd and 2 doesn’t just kill one play — it kills the whole sequence that follows.

“You can’t get stopped on 2nd and 2. You can’t lose yards on 2nd and 2 on inside zone. Offensively, it starts there. I think we had 3 runs that lost yards and put us in 2nd long against a team, extra long. You can’t be in 2nd and extra long against,” Milanovich said.

Ford echoed that same frustration when asked about the running game specifically, noting that establishing the run early doesn’t mean much if the operation to actually run the ball isn’t crisp later in the game. “Even though the defense is knowing you’re going to run the ball, you have to be able to execute it and be able to run the ball,” Ford said. “We got to get 2nd and 2 there. I think that was super, super crucial for us there.”

Milanovich didn’t let the defense or special teams off the hook either, summing up the full-team nature of the collapse in blunt terms: “We played half of football on defense and we took penalties on special teams.”

A Locker Room That’s Hurting But Not Panicking

Talbert didn’t sugarcoat how much this one stings, especially with Hamilton trying to build off momentum from a win over Saskatchewan the week before. But he was adamant the belief inside the room hasn’t cracked.

“Emotionally, it hurts bad. We wish our record was different. We wanted to win today, wanted to win last week, but I still have all the confidence in the world. I’m sick right now. I’m pissed, but I have all the confidence in myself and everybody in that locker room,” Talbert said.

Asked about the road ahead — a stretch that’s shaping up to require a serious run of wins just to get Hamilton into playoff position — Talbert kept it simple. “I have the confidence that we can do that. I wish we weren’t in this position, but now it is what it is. We have to go win those games,” he said.

Ford struck a similar tone looking toward the Labour Day stretch, acknowledging the emotional gut-punch of a loss like this one without letting it define where the team goes from here. “After a loss you’re flustered, right? So there’s a lot of emotion going on in the locker room, but we’ve got a good group of guys. We’re going to bounce back,” Ford said.

What’s Next

Hamilton doesn’t have the luxury of a long look in the mirror. With the schedule tightening and the East race far from settled, the Tiger-Cats need results, not just better vibes at halftime.
