Nearly 70 Manitoba children got the chance to feel like professional football players Sunday during an annual skills camp at Princess Auto Stadium.
KidSport Manitoba and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers teamed up for the co-ed camp for children ages seven to 10, led by local football star Nic Demski.
The non-contact event gave kids a chance to take part in football drills and learn fundamental skills on the same field where the Blue Bombers play.
“I think it’s important just to get the kids involved and gives them the opportunity to come in and play on the field with the players that they idolize and watch on game days. I think it helps keep their interest in the game gives them something to look forward too,” said Nick Basarowich, a parent and volunteer.
The event also raised money for KidSport Manitoba, which helps families facing financial barriers access organized sports.
“I mean growing up, I never had a lot of money either, so being able to kind of give back to kids that came where I came from and stuff like that, it’s such a positive thing for kids to be involved in and like I said organizations like this that give the kids the opportunity that might not have the opportunity, I think they are so vital,” said Basarowich.
His eight-year-old son Chase was among the participants.
“I get to meet almost all the Bombers and yeah,” Chase said when asked what he enjoyed about the camp.
Asked who his favourite Bomber is, Chase named Brady.
“Uhm he’s just like really nice and he has a lot of dogs and I love them,” he said.
Sam Cortes, events specialist with Sport Manitoba, says all proceeds from the event will go toward helping Manitoba children play a full season of football.
“Every kid deserves a chance to play, so if we can get more kids off the sidelines and into the games, that’s really what it’s all about,” said Cortes.
