A man is in custody after a security guard was stabbed at a grocery store on Sargent Avenue on Friday afternoon.
In a news release issued on Sunday afternoon, Winnipeg police say they arrested a 23-year-old man in the area of Sherbrook and Ellice Avenue without incident late Saturday morning.
Police say the accused entered into the store, selected a number of retail items, and attempted to leave the store without paying for them.
A physical altercation ensued, and the man allegedly stabbed the security guard with a sharp-edged weapon in the upper body just outside the store, according to police.
When police attended the scene, the suspect had fled with stolen merchandise, and they located a 24-year-old man suffering from a serious upper-body injury, the release said.
The victim was transported to hospital in critical condition and has since been upgraded to stable. The manager of the security company previously told CBC that the employee was discharged from hospital on Friday, and is “doing well.”
The 23-year-old accused has been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon.
Sobey’s, the parent company of FreshCo — where the assault took place — said in a statement on Friday afternoon that “the safety of our teammates and customers is our top priority.”
A 29-year-old man was also arrested last week for attacking a security guard at a Dollarama store in the St. James area earlier in the week. The man was charged with aggravated assault, robbery and failing to comply with a probation order.
