Numerous service changes to be introduced by Mississauga’s municipal transit system will make travel easier for bus riders heading to and from post-secondary schools, Canada’s biggest airport and other busy corriders across the city.

That’s what MiWay officials are promising as changes affecting various bus routes operated by Mississauga’s transit provider are set to take effect starting one week from today on Sept. 7.

Transit officials said on Monday the service changes “focus on some of Mississauga’s busiest transit corridors such as major shopping centres, regional transit hubs, post-secondary institutions and employment districts.”

Among locations in the city set to see better transit bus service are:

Square One Shopping Centre.
Burnhamthorpe Community Centre.
Kipling GO station and Clarkson GO station.
University of Toronto Mississauga, Humber College and Sheridan College.
Meadowvale Business Park and Toronto Pearson Airport.

“MiWay regularly reviews how customers use each route to match service with demand,” municipal transit officials said in an online notice to the public on Monday.

MiWay says it’s shifting service to where demand is high, with moves that include:

On weekdays during evening periods, increasing service to routes 20 Rathburn, 26 Burnhamthorpe and 53 Kennedy, and during peak periods to routes 107 Malton Express and 108 Financial Express.
On weekends during core hours, increasing service to routes 3 Bloor, 5 Dixie, 26 Burnhamthorpe, 35 Eglinton, 61 Mavis, 66 McLaughlin, 107 Malton Express and 109 Meadowvale Express.

Meanwhile, due to reduced ridership, MiWay says it’s also adjusting the following routes:

18 Derry: Frequency will reduce during weekday peak periods to reflect current ridership levels. Customers along the corridor can continue to use routes 42 Derry and 66 McLaughlin.
9 Rathburn: Service to Erindale GO station will be maintained during weekday morning and afternoon rush hours only, when demand is highest. During midday and late evening, this route will no longer service Erindale GO station.

Also to take effect beginning next week, Route 110 University Express will run more often between the City Centre Transit Terminal at Square One and Clarkson GO station, according to MiWay.

“As part of this change, Route 110A University Express will be discontinued, with service merging with Route 110 University Express,” MiWay said, adding the route helps students, commuters and residents travel between downtown Mississauga, University of Toronto Mississauga, the Erin Mills community and Clarkson GO station.

Also as of Sept. 7, the local transit agency will resume operation of its regular post-secondary and secondary school bus routes as students return to classes.

Regular school service will resume on the following routes:

44 Mississauga Road
126 Burnhamthorpe Express
All 300-series secondary school routes

In addition, a new high school route will be introduced, operating between Meadowvale Village and Streetsville Secondary School, MiWay officials said.

The new bus (Route 305) will arrive at the Streetsville high school each weekday at 7:55 a.m. and depart for the day at 2:48 p.m.

MiWay says additional school trips will also be reinstated on regular routes to provide extra capacity during school start and dismissal times. The following school trips on regular routes will see new or adjusted weekday trip times to align with new bell times:

13 Glen Erin (John Fraser Secondary School)
14/14A Lorne Park (Lorne Park Secondary School)

29 Park Royal (Clarkson Secondary School)
36 Ridgeway (Loyola Secondary School)
51 Tomken (Philip Pocock Secondary School)
