People in Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon and elsewhere in the Credit River watershed are being urged to stay away from all watercourses the next few days as heavy rain is expected to drench much of the Greater Toronto Area.
Credit Valley Conservation, the organization that protects natural areas and watercourses in Peel’s three municipalities and several other communities, issued a watershed safety statement early Monday afternoon.
In its statement, the conservation authority noted “significant rain” that could exceed 50 millimetres in some locations is moving into the region on Monday and into Tuesday along with the potential for thunderstorms.
“Flooding isn’t expected, but water could pool on roads/low-lying areas,” CVC officials said in an online weather statement. “Keep kids and pets away from watercourses.”
A watershed safety statement does not rise to the alert level of a flood outlook statement, which the CVC often issues during heavy rainstorms.
Flood outlook statements are issued as an early notice of the potential for flooding based on a forecast of heavy rain or other weather conditions.
CVC said it will continue to closely monitor both the weather and water levels across the region.

Environment and Climate Change Canada said earlier on Monday that parts of the GTA could see 50 millimetres of rain today.

Rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 millimetres are expected in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Halton and Durham, according to a special weather statement from the national weather agency.
Some areas have already received up to 25 millimetres of rain on Monday morning into the early afternoon, the agency added.
Another round of showers and embedded thunderstorms is expected on Monday afternoon.
