Trade brewing between the Canadiens and Oilers: Analyst weighs in on the growing rumor

The Edmonton Oilers are losing four players for training camp.
But according to Marco D’Amico, that won’t necessarily create an opening for Samuel Montembeault.
Savoie, 22, is coming off a 37-point season in 82 games and was expected to play an important role in the Oilers’ top nine this year.
Andersen was expected to back up Tristan Jarry in net, which naturally sparked speculation about a possible trade for Samuel Montembeault.
Marco D’Amico quickly shut down that possibility:
“If you acquire that salary, you’re going to have to keep that salary one way or another.
I know people are going to say: Andersen is injured for six weeks, this is the time to make a trade for Samuel Montembeault.
I don’t think the two are connected, because the Oilers wouldn’t even have enough cap space to make that acquisition.”

The reasoning makes sense.
These short-term injuries don’t allow the Oilers to use long-term injured reserve to create cap savings.
Edmonton will still have to carry those four contracts while the players are injured, leaving no room to add a goaltender like Samuel Montembeault.
The Quebec-born goalie, who carries a $3.15 million annual cap hit, may have to wait for another opportunity elsewhere in the NHL.
