Giving cops a fake name during a traffic stop has led to charges for a Brampton man who was already under a driving ban, police say.
Officers pulled over the vehicle shortly before 12:30 a.m. on Saturday near Gordon Street and Wellington Street in Guelph, the Guelph Police Service says.
The vehicle was seen driving with its rear lights not properly illuminated, and police say the driver was unable to provide his licence.
An investigation revealed the driver had given officers a fake name, and police identified the driver as a 25-year-old from Brampton who was already under “several driving prohibitions and a probation order.”
Police say the driver from Brampton was arrested and charged with four counts of driving while prohibited, breaching a probation order and several other offences under Highway Traffic Act, police say.
Driving prohibitions can result from Criminal Code convictions, and a conviction of violation of the order will lead to a suspension of one year for a first offence or two years for a subsequent offence. If you are caught driving while your licence is suspended for a Criminal Code offence, the vehicle you are driving will be impounded for a minimum of 45 days.
The name of the accused has not been disclosed, and police say the suspect was held for a bail hearing. The accused has been released and is scheduled to make a court appearance on Sept. 25 to answer to the charges.
