If you’ve seen the weather back east this week, you may have wanted to cancel your flight.
Air Canada is offering assistance for travellers flying from Vancouver (and anywhere else) impacted by the Toronto storm.
A severe system ravaged the Greater Toronto Area Wednesday (Sept. 2), causing widespread flooding, power outages, damage and travel disruptions. Rogers Stadium, the city’s 50,000-seat arena, suffered massive damage.
The Toronto storm has created problems for travellers flying into Lester B. Pearson International Airport (YYZ).
A whopping 184 flights have been cancelled to YYZ over the past 24 hours, according to online flight tracker FlightAware. More than 400 flights have been cancelled, too.
Shaham Aligarian posted a video of the destruction in the storm’s wake.
“This is what the deadly storm left behind flooded streets, downed lines, homes damaged. Hundreds of flights cancelled at YYZ, thousands without power,” they wrote on X.

Toronto storm: What to expect at YYZ now
On Wednesday, YYZ staff warned travellers of the pervasive delays and cancellations at the airport.
Air traffic management initiatives are currently in place due to active weather affecting Toronto Pearson and the surrounding area. In an update on X on Thursday, YYZ staff noted that “operations are returning to normal following yesterday’s storm, which brought about 40 mm of rain to Toronto Pearson.”
Some of the storm’s impacts continue to affect flight schedules, so travellers should check their flight status before visiting the airport.
Cancelled Vancouver flights: Air Canada offers help for impacted travellers
Travellers flying to or from YYZ or Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) may change their flight free of charge on Thursday.
You can retrieve your booking online to make the change.
If you purchased your ticket with Air Canada Vacations, contact them directly at 1-800-296-3408.
The airline is also offering the same assistance for travellers impacted on flights to New York or Philadelphia due to thunderstorms and air traffic controller shortages.
Flair Airlines, WestJet and Porter Airlines do not have flight advisories stating whether they will help customers impacted by the significant weather. Vancouver Is Awesome has reached to the airlines for more information.
