The Rose theatre is turning 20 and the city is throwing a birthday celebration with a free concert from local artists, including a JUNO award winner Kirk Diamond.

From international superstars to local productions, The Rose has seen more than three million visitors come through its doors since it opened in 2006. The more than $50-million, city-owned and operated theatre was even the final Canadian stop for renowned late comedian George Carlin.

And to celebrate the theatre’s legacy, the city is celebrating with a day of free events and music from Brampton-based performers.

“This birthday is an opportunity to celebrate the many people who have helped shape The Rose and the role it continues to play in showcasing the creativity and talent that make Brampton such a vibrant city,” Mayor Patrick Brown says of the upcoming 20th anniversary festivities.

The event starts at 10 a.m. with an open house, and guests are invited to explore The Rose behind the scenes, take in family-friendly activities and shop at the artist market.

There will also be live music throughout the day, with performances by the Gather Round Singers, Jumblies Theatre’s inclusive community choir, and Dan Brown’s Wild Symphony – a family-friendly musical experience presented in partnership with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Then at 6 p.m., the celebration will move to The Rose Mainstage for The Homegrown 20th anniversary concert.

Featuring a headlining performance by JUNO-award winning reggae artist Kirk Diamond and hosted by This Is Brampton alum Keesha Brownie, performances will include The Wild Woman and TC Spades, and a dance performance curated by Rachel Chen.

The free event starts at 10 p.m. on Sept. 19 at The Rose, located at 1 Theatre Lane in Brampton.

Visitors to The Rose are also invited to share their favourite memories and photos from the past 20 years by submitting them to [email protected].

“For two decades, you’ve joined us for epic performances, milestone celebrations, first performances, community moments, and standing ovations. You are the heart of our story, and success,” The Rose says. “We’d love to hear your memories from the past 20 years of performances. What does The Rose mean to you? What memories do you hold tightly or photos you look at fondly?”

The Rose’s main building is some 64,000 square feet, and the building features acoustic design features like an exterior “skin” of suspended isolators to insulate the building from external vibrations. The Rose theatre has some 3,500 roof isolators for sound vibration and control, and over 500 rubber bearing pads that “float”
