SARTELL, Minn. – The Gustavus Adolphus College women’s golf team competed in the opening round of the Saint Benedict Invitational on Saturday for their first competition of the fall season. After the first round, the Gusties stand in fifth place out of the field of 11 teams with a team score of +37. Gustavus’ B-team follows in sixth place at +45.
“Great to be back on the course competing today,” said Gustavus head coach Scott Moe. “Weather nerves jumped up and grabbed us a few times. Certainly, we can start better. Most importantly, when we feel the nerves hit, we need to back off and regroup instead of pulling the trigger when we aren’t quite ready. That got us a few times.”
Macalester leads the field at +14. UW-Eau Claire follows as the current runner-up at +18 with St. Olaf right behind in third at +19. Saint Benedict stands just ahead of the Gusties in fourth place at +26.
Sarah Gutuza of the Gusties B-team leads Gustavus after the opening round, shooting +5 through the first 18. The junior stands tied for seventh place with five others.
Teckla Wahlstrand and Mary Kate Hewitt followed with scores +8, standing tied for 16th overall and leading the Gustavus A-team.
Riley Zebroski and Annika Johnson followed with scores of +10 and +11 to round out the top four scores for the Gusties’ A-team. Zebroski stands tied for 22nd overall while Johnson is tied for 27th.
“Mary Kate had one of her best rounds today and it was nice to see Sarah fire 77,” said Moe. “We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow and learn from some of the situations today and feel good about our round.”
Gustavus will return to the course on Sunday, September 6 for the second and final day of the Saint Benedict Invitational with the tee times set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
