This year, Labour Day falls on Sept. 7, 2026, in Mississauga, Brampton, Toronto, Hamilton, Oakville, Milton, Burlington, Oshawa, Whitby, Pickering, Clarington, Niagara Falls and the Niagara Region.
While government buildings, services and many businesses/stores will be closed on Monday, some places will remain open. However, to avoid disappointment, it’s best to call ahead or check online to confirm if your favourite restaurant or local grocery store is open.
Here’s what’s open and closed in southern Ontario towns and cities on Labour Day:
Square One Shopping Centre is open, along with Walmart Supercentre, The Rec Room and The Food District. Whole Foods Square One and T&T Supermarket are also open. Residents and visitors can also visit Celebration Square and the Celebration Square fountain, Rabba grocery stores, select Beer Store locations, the YMCA health and fitness centre in Mississauga, restaurants, cafes, and bars that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead to confirm), the Mississauga Chinese Centre, and movie theatres.
On Sept. 7, non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including City Hall), and Region of Peel offices will be closed. Banks, libraries and some community centres will also be closed.
Canada Post will be closed (no mail pickup or delivery), and there will be no waste collection on Labour Day. Garbage and recycling will be picked up one day later than usual, and Community Recycling Centres will also be closed.
MiWay will operate on a regular Sunday schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.

After the storm damage at Rogers Stadium, do you feel safe attending an event there?
On Sept. 7, residents can visit Bramalea City Centre, some smaller grocery stores (such as Rabba grocery stores), most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, most restaurants, cafes and bars that are open on Mondays (call ahead to confirm), movie theatres, some recreational facilities, select Beer Store locations, playgrounds, parks and trails and YMCA locations.
On Labour Day, all non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including City Hall) and Region of Peel offices will be closed. Peel services that will not operate on the holiday include Access Peel counters, the Dental Services Contact Centre, early years and child care services, the Family Health Call Centre, vaccination clinics, healthy sexuality clinics, Ontario Works in Peel, the needle exchange/harm reduction mobile van and housing services/client services.
Banks, libraries and some community centres will also be closed.
Canada Post will be closed (no mail pickup or delivery), and there will be no waste collection on Sept. 7. Garbage and recycling will be picked up one day later than usual, and Community Recycling Centres will also be closed.
Brampton Transit and Zum will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Halton – Oakville, Burlington, Milton and Halton Hills
On Labour Day, residents and visitors can visit local parks and certain outdoor recreational amenities, most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, most restaurants, cafes and bars that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead to confirm), some smaller grocery stores (such as Rabba), select Beer Store locations, Burlington’s nine splash pads and outdoor pools, Conservation Halton Parks, Lions outdoor pool in Oakville, the YMCA and Toronto Premium Outlets.
On Monday, Sept. 7, banks, city/town halls, non-emergency federal and provincial government offices and non-emergency Halton Region offices will be closed.
Most community centres, seniors’ centres, pools, arenas, and libraries will also be closed, along with the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts and the Mattamy National Cycling Centre. Oakville Place, Burlington Centre, Mapleview Mall and Milton Mall will be closed.
On Labour Day, a number of places will be open, including outdoor pools, parks and conservation areas, most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, some restaurants that are usually open on Mondays (call ahead to be sure), Movie theatres, Splitsville Entertainment, and select Beer Store locations.
All non-emergency federal, provincial and municipal (including City Hall) offices are closed on Monday, Sept. 7. Other services and businesses that will be closed on Labour Day include banks, rec centres, arenas, Canada Post (no mail pickup or delivery) and libraries. Lime Ridge Mall and Eastgate Square will be closed, along with Hamilton Civic Museums, the Tropical Green House at Gage Park and the Hamilton Farmers’ Market.
Garbage and recycling (blue box, green bin and yard waste) will be collected one day later than usual, with no pickup on Sept. 7.
For transit, DARTS will operate on holiday service hours, while HSR will operate on a Sunday schedule. GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.
Durham – Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington
A number of places will be open in Durham on Labour Day, including restaurants, cafes and bars that are typically open on Mondays (call ahead to confirm), movie theatres, Camp Samac outdoor pool in Oshawa and Ajax Memorial Outdoor Pool, parks, beaches and splash pads, most craft breweries (call ahead), the YMCA in Oshawa, Oshawa’s Parkwood Estates and Oshawa Zoo and casinos.
In Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Clarington, Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog, non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including city and town halls) and Durham Region offices will be closed on Labour Day. Banks, post offices, libraries, waste transfer stations and most community centres will also be closed on Monday, Sept. 7. Pickering Town Centre and Oshawa Centre will be closed, along with Pickering Museum Village and most grocery stores.
There will be no waste pickup, so garbage and recycling will be collected one day later than usual.
Durham Transit and PULSE buses will operate on a holiday/weekend schedule and GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule.
Niagara Region – Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, St. Catharines, Welland
Since Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake are popular tourist destinations, most businesses will remain open on Labour Day as they do on most federal and provincial holidays. Residents and visitors can check out Canada One in Niagara Falls, SmartCentres in Niagara Falls, Outlet Collection at Niagara in Niagara-on-the-Lake, some smaller grocery stores, most wineries and breweries (call ahead), most restaurants, cafes and bars that are open Mondays (call ahead), movie theatres and tourist attractions.
Non-emergency federal, provincial, municipal (including city and town halls) and Niagara Region offices will be closed. Fairview Mall in St. Catharines, Briarfield Shopping Centre in St. Catharines, Pendale Plaza in St. Catharines, Seaway Mall in Welland and SmartCentres in Welland and St. Catharines will be closed, along with libraries, community centres, banks, Beer Store locations and LCBO locations.
There will be no changes to waste collection.
GO Transit will operate on a Saturday schedule and other transit services throughout the Niagara Region will operate on holiday hours.
In Toronto, many places will be open on Sept. 7, including the Eaton Centre, Pacific Mall, several grocery stores (such as Rabba, Whole Foods and Eataly locations), restaurants, cafes and bars that are typically open Mondays (call ahead), most Shoppers Drug Mart locations, parks, trails and other outdoor recreational spaces.
A number of tourist attractions will also be open, including Arcadia Earth, the AGO, the Toronto Zoo, the ROM, the Gardiner Museum, the CN Tower, the Aga Khan Museum, the Hockey Hall of Fame, Centreville Amusement Park, the CNE, Casa Loma, the High Park Animal Display, Riverdale Farm and more.
On Labour Day, all non-emergency federal, provincial and municipal services (including City Hall) will be closed, along with Canada Post (no mail pick-up or delivery), banks, libraries and the St. Lawrence Market. A number of malls will also be closed, including Sherway Gardens, Yorkdale, Dufferin Mall, the Shops at Don Mills, Gerrard Square and Scarborough Town Centre.
There will be no impact on waste collection.
Transit users should note that the TTC will operate on holiday service hours, while GO Transit will run on a Saturday schedule.
