North Carolina senior Reagan Southerland shot 1-under-par 71 Monday in the first round of the season, the opening round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo, Minn.
The Tar Heels are sixth in the 12-team field after a 4-over 292 round. Wake Forest is the 18-hole leader at 8 under par. The Demon Deacons were the only team in the field to shoot below par.
Virginia, South Carolina and USC are tied for second place at even par, Oregon is fifth at 3 over and UNC is sixth at 4 over.
Southerland, who posted the third-best scoring average in UNC history a year ago, made two birdies and only one bogey, which came on the 16th hole.
Helen Yeung opened with a 1-over 73, Ing Iadpluem and Marie Prats-Rigual both carded 2-over 74s and Katie Vu finished with a 78.
Round two of the 54-hole event is Tuesday.
