The Winnipeg Labour Council cancelled its Labour Day family fun day because of forecasted rain Monday.
But city unions say people should still take the time to observe the holiday and recognise the contributions of workers.
Manitoba’s Minister of Labour and Immigration Malaya Marcelino and Minister of Families, Nahanni Fontaine, who were scheduled to speak at the event, released a statement instead.
“We are proud to stand with workers and unions who have fought for safer, fairer and more inclusive workplaces. Their advocacy has helped make Manitoba a better place to work, and we will continue working alongside them to build on that progress,” they said.
“Today, we celebrate the workers who keep Manitoba moving forward and reaffirm our commitment to making sure every Manitoban can earn a good living in a workplace where they are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.”
Manitoba nurses’ union president Darlene Jackson says there were other ways to show support despite the weather interfering with celebrations.
“Just appreciating the fact that unions have negotiated things for their members that we’ve been able to get for every Manitoban and Canadian,” Jackson said.
Jackson added that Manitobans can show support beyond labour day during union actions like the Dynacare strike set to start Tuesday morning.
“When you’re driving past the picket lines, give them a honk,” Jackson said.
“Stop if you have time and walk their picket line with them for a bit and support the fact that they are owned by a for-profit American company and their salaries are 30-50 per cent lower than unionized workers at Shared Health.”
