King George Boulevard closed for several hours Monday, Sept. 7, due to a crash that involved a Surrey Police vehicle and another, seriously injuring a pedestrian and also a driver.
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was called to the scene in Whalley along with SPS collision investigators.
At around 2:56 a.m., a civilian’s Chevy Avalanche SUV crashed near a SkyTrain pillar beside King George Station.
In a website post, the IIO says SPS officers attempted to stop the black truck near the intersection of King George Boulevard and 96 Avenue.
“A collision involving the pickup truck and a police vehicle subsequently occurred. The driver failed to stop. A short time later, the pickup truck was involved in a collision with a concrete SkyTrain barrier on King George Boulevard at Holland Commons, resulting in injuries to the driver.”
A pedestrian was transported to hospital with life threatening injuries, and the driver of the other vehicle was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Surrey Police in a news release sent Monday at 1:43 p.m.
“King George Boulevard will be closed between approximately 98A Avenue and 100 Avenue, north and south bound for several hours as investigators examine the scene. Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes,” SPS says.
Investigators with IIO are asking anyone who witnessed any part of the incident, or who may have video – including dash camera footage – to contact the IIO by phone or email, via iiobc.ca.
