PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Pilots earned their first win of the season on Tuesday, defeating the Southern Oregon Raiders 4-1 at Merlo Field. The Pilots are 1-3-1 on the year.
Portland got a pair of goals from Joe Highfield, his first two of the season. Dominic Edwards opened his account with his first collegiate goal and the Pilots got an own goal as well in the second half.
How it Happened
Portland took control early and never relented. Their first goal came in the 38th minute. Diego Rosas played a perfect low pass to Julian Bretous, who found a diving Dominic Edwards. Edwards finished from the left side for his first goal as a Pilot.
Edwards drew a penalty in the 41st minute that helped set up Portland’s second goal. After drawing the penalty, Joe Highfield stepped up to the spot and knocked it in for a goal, giving Portland the 2-0 lead at the half.
Highfield scored again in the 59th minute. Highfield corralled a pass from Isaac Emojong, bouncing the ball into place above the box. Highfield launched it with the left foot and scored, making it 3-0. An own goal in the 68th minute closed the scoring for Portland. Southern Oregon scored in the final 10 seconds to avoid the shutout and make it 4-1 Portland.
Game Notes
Highfield scored twice for his first two goals of the season. With the two goals, he now has 20 for his career.
Edwards scored his first goal as a Pilot, opening his account.
Rosas, Bretous and Emojong all had assists on the day. It’s the first assist of the year for all three Pilots.
Rosas’s assist was the 28th of his career. The assist moves him to sole possession of sixth all-time for the Pilots, and his 28 career assists are the most in NCAA Division I among active players.
The Pilots had 31 shots to Southern Oregon’s three. It’s the eighth time in program history the team has recorded 30 shots or more in a match.
Portland had 12 corner kicks in the match.
Numerous Pilots made their debuts with the team, including Andrew Bromert, Dominic Berrios, Adriano Samayoa and Nick Bishop.
Alex Waggoner made his season debut with the Pilots as well.
