An Estevan golfer played at the Golf Nationals at the Tsawwassen Springs Golf Course in Tsawwassen, B.C. last August, after qualifying through strong performances in provincial tournaments. Xander Erdie said the experience was rewarding both on and off the course.
“I won a tournament (to qualify) and then got second. I worked hard. I had fun, and my dad was there to support me. I really liked it.”

Starting young
He first took up the sport with his father and has been playing since he was young.
“I went golfing with my dad, and then I really liked it, so I’ve been playing golf since I was three years old. I worked hard, and I really enjoy going out with my dad.”
Trevor Erdie, father of Xander, said the trip to nationals was about more than scores.
“It was a lot of fun. Going out to BC, it was cool to be invited. He’s been working hard all summer, and it was kind of a nice thing for us to go out and do. We had a little son-and-dad weekend away out in BC, and the weather was great out there, and the golf was awesome. I made some new friends, and it was a really good environment out there.”
Earning a spot at nationals
Xander qualified for nationals after winning a tournament in Estevan and finishing second at a tournament in Regina. At the national championship, the family focused on improvement rather than results.
“On his final day, he shot a 93, which was six strokes better than he did on day one. So that was our goal. We weren’t really going there to compete against everyone else. We were kind of going there to just play our game. On day one, he shot a 99, and then on day two, he shot a 93. That was kind of our goal going into day two, was just do better than day one.”
Looking ahead
With the season winding down, Xander already has his sights set on the future.
“I want to go back to Nationals.”
Trevor said the family’s approach to the sport remains simple.
“…We’re very much in it for the fun and just spending time together.”
