Immersive Maple Ridge exhibition kicks off ACT Art Gallery season

Bold colours and expressive brushwork embody The ACT Art Centre’s first exhibition of the season.
New works by Vancouver-based artist Laurence Belzile will be featured in this solo exhibition called “Créatrices d’images.”
This exhibition centers around five large-scale abstract paintings dedicated to five artists who influence Laurence Belzile’s practice: Betty Goodwin, Faith Ringgold, Georgia O’Keeffe, Françoise Sullivan, and Marlene Dumas.
“I’m excited to begin the 2026-2027 season with Laurence Belzile’s vibrant abstract solo exhibition, Créatrices d’images,” said Courtney Miller, gallery manager and curator.
“Through her homage to five women artists, Belzile highlights their presence within art history while offering viewers insight into the artists who have shaped her practice,” added Miller.
Belzile’s artwork is described as vibrant and textural, that embrace the language and nature of abstract painting, while drawing inspiration from the five visionary female artists.
Her work reflects elements of storytelling and representation, as Belzile reinterprets each artist’s techniques in her own style.
The large-scale paintings, which are 54 x 76 inches each, create an immersive gallery environment that intends to draw visitors into the work.
The abstract paintings are also paired with reference materials and smaller accompanying works, anchoring the artist’s artistic practice within a lineage of influential women artists.
Belzile has had an active role within Vancouver’s francophone community, and so all exhibition information panels and printed promotional materials are presented in both French and English.
A free opening reception is being held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12, at The ACT Art Gallery at 11944 Haney Place, Maple Ridge.
It will feature an interview-style conversation at 2:30 p.m., between the artist and Miller.
The exhibition runs until Saturday, Nov. 7.
Regular Gallery Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and other selected evenings. General admission to The ACT Art Gallery is free.
The ACT Art Gallery is owned and operated by the City of Maple Ridge and presents rotating exhibitions featuring emerging and mid-career artists from across the region and beyond.
